BBVA Compass NBA Checking Account Review 2024

BBVA Compass NBA checking account review 2024. BBVA bank fees, free ATM deposits, debit card, BBVA Compass checking promo offer.

BBVA Compass NBA Checking Overview

BBVA Compass, the U.S. subsidiary of the Spanish banking group BBVA, is the official bank of the National Basketball Association. As such, it has an NBA-themed checking account that comes with several nice features. Let's check it out.

Opening an Account

It takes just a few minutes to open the NBA checking account. The on-line form is user friendly. It does ask for a Social Security Number and a government-issued ID, such as a state driver's license. Applicants who already have a BBVA Compass account can have information automatically entered into the application. Doing so makes the account-opening process even faster and easier.

There is a $25 minimum opening deposit requirement. This can be mailed in by check, or sent electronically from an external account. The bank also allows funding with a credit or debit card.

Several account forms must be signed electronically. By default, statements are actually sent through snail mail, and cost $3 per month. Customers who want electronic statements must turn off paper statements after the account has been opened, a minor inconvenience.

The checking account is available on the website immediately after finishing the application process. Customers must create three security questions, which are used later for log-in purposes.

Applicants who choose to fund the NBA checking account from an external bank account must enter the User ID and password of the external account, and answer a security question from the external account if it has one.

Customers can add a second BBVA Compass account to the checking account login. However, it takes the bank 24-48 hours to do this, another slight nuisance.

NBA Checking Account

With electronic statements, the NBA checking account has no fees. The bank is FDIC insured, so the account balance is protected by the U.S. federal government up to $250,000. Disappointingly, no interest is paid on the account.

The checking account comes with a Visa debit card that displays the logo of any NBA team the customer chooses. Checks can be added to the account, but the customer must order and pay for them.

The bank charges no fees at BBVA Compass or Allpoint ATM's. There is a $2.50 charge for ATM transactions outside of this network. There is also a fee of $25 if the account is closed in less than 6 months.

Bill pay is available with the checking account. There is no fee for this service.

Account Management Tools

The bank's website is easy to navigate and includes many helpful account management tools. Users can transfer funds between BBVA Compass accounts or external accounts. Users can establish overdraft protection, nickname on-line accounts, order copies of statements and cleared checks, and much more.

Customers can also sign up for alerts on the website. These include many helpful notifications, such as balance information, sensitive activity, or when a withdraw exceeds a certain amount. Alerts can be established just for certain accounts if desired. The notifications can be sent to e-mail or mobile phone.

Besides the slightly more traditional method of using a computer, the bank's customers can also access accounts with a smartphone or tablet. These apps will function on Apple, Android, and mobile web. There are some useful features on the mobile platform, including bill pay and mobile check deposit.

Customer Service

A useful FAQ is available on the website. It can be accessed anytime by clicking on the question mark icon in the upper-right corner of the page. The website also has a messaging system where customers can send an e-mail to customer service 24/7.

Amazingly, a live representative answers the phone when calling the bank during the weekday hours of 8 am to 7 pm (CST), and on Saturday from 9 am to 4 pm. Outside of these hours, an automated phone system is available, although a different number needs to be dialed to reach it.

BBVA Compass NBA Checking Account Review Recap

BBVA Compass has a lot of great features for daily cash management. NBA fans and customers who prefer to speak to a live agent rather than an automated phone system will want to open an account here. Savers who are mostly interested in APY or who want free checks will do better elsewhere.
