Know where and when there are free events in your area.
Time Out website and magazine offers a list with events in New York City, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Chicago, Boston, Las Vegas and other cities. Some of them are free or discounted. There are also websites that list free or discounted events in your area - Google them.
You could find out when local attraction have a "free day". For example, in NYC you could go to many museums for free every Friday night and Bronx Zoo is free on Wednesdays.
If you go to somewhere a lot, like a zoo, amusement park, etc., then buy a season tickets. Very often just 2-3 visits to the place will cost as much as a season pass.
